Using Slideshare in EFL Classroom

Using Slideshare in EFL classes.

To teach a class only following the book is the definition of a boring class. In my classes, I like to use two or three activities outside the book. With methods like TPR OR Audio-lingual drills, the class becomes very dynamic. Recently, one of my favorite activities has been to use pictures. My parents always keep old newspapers so I have used these in class. However, I sometimes want to find specific types of pictures and students sometimes get confused trying to use a specific vocabulary or a specific grammar structure with the pictures. So, I found this really cool website named Slideshare. You can see a variety of different slideshows with information of all types. For example, I found a PPT of some EFL methods. Anyway, I decided to type in the search box, FUNNY PICTURES. Do you know what came up? 40 slides of funny pictures! I thought to myself, “I must use these in class!” So I did.

A great way to use this is to find a specific topic for pictures, animals for example. Looking at the pictures increases retention of vocabulary and it’s meaningful to the student. Go through the slides and you can do different things:

1. Have sts say the animal.

2. Use the specific animal in a sentence. Say it.

Ex. The ant is small. My mother likes elephants.

3. Have sts ask questions to each other.

Ex. Is the tiger green? No, it’s orange and black.

4. Have sts write positive, negative or questions.

If you have a more advanced class, you can search for different topics. For example, cities. You can use this to practice present perfect or any other grammar structure.

1. Look at the city, guess where it is. Take 30 seconds to talk about it using present perfect.

I hope this triggers your creativity in class and makes your classes more dynamic.

The Most Important Thing! Lo mas importante!

Pronunciation Practice Armando-Monday 9'9'9

Primera Entrada! First Entry!

This is my first entry. That's what they call it here in the blog. I just want to tell you about the Academy. It's 5:39. At 6:30 I have a class with Elsy Viana and Lydia Zelayandia. They were my students at my last workplace. They both have good pronunciation but have to communicate better. One of the ideas I manage in CEA is trust. A school director once said, "You can't be a student's friend" I say "Not just friends, brothers too!" Trust is key in this academy and I hope this class is and example of that. I'll try to record some stuff in class and upload it. I don't know how to upload audio right now but I hope I can soon.

Peace!
